Most folks\u00a0don’t go on vacation preparing\u00a0to be robbed or mugged, but they\u00a0probably should. \u00a0Tourists tend to\u00a0wander about in predictable herds\u2014wallets stuffed with cash and distracted by their surroundings\u2014making them prime targets for\u00a0thieves. \u00a0Pick-pocketing is so common at some attractions\u00a0that signs are required\u00a0to alert\u00a0visitors. \u00a0But even if you avoid the crowds and\u00a0take the road\u00a0less traveled,\u00a0you could still be robbed or mugged. \u00a0Fortunately there are many ways\u00a0to reduce the likelihood and consequences of this happening to you.<\/p>\n

Hide money in several unexpected places<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>

One of the easiest things to do\u00a0is\u00a0to hide\u00a0your money in several different places, making it unlikely\u00a0that thieves will find it all. \u00a0Even if most of your valuables\u00a0are stolen, a bit of cash\u00a0will let\u00a0you reach\u00a0a\u00a0police station or your hotel, or grab something to eat while you wait for grandma\u00a0to wire more money. \u00a0Options for hiding\u00a0emergency funds\u00a0include\u00a0a money belt, secret pockets in your\u00a0clothing or\u00a0hand luggage, and (sometimes)\u00a0your shoes. \u00a0Too bad many of these places are well known to thieves or impractical for other reasons\u2014we still haven’t found a good way to hide money in a flip flop, for example (and to be honest, it’s not something we’re looking into\u00a0right now).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
