Marie. At\u00a0325 km\u00b2 (125 mi\u00b2), it&#8217;s the 6th\u00a0largest lake island in the world,\u00a0and the 3rd largest in Canada (after Manitoulin Island and\u00a0 \u00eele Ren\u00e9-Levasseur). If you&#8217;re looking for an interesting, yet accessible, destination away from the crowds\u2014this is it. You can read the\u00a0account of our own paddling trip\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/adventureproof.com\/?page_id=484\">here<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Given its scenic waters and historic appeal, paddling around St. Joseph Island can be a great adventure\u00a0for intermediate-level\u00a0paddlers. A complete loop is about 100 km (62 statute miles), and takes between 3-5 days by sea kayak\u2014depending on weather, fitness and motivation. Much of the route is sheltered and large\u00a0crossings can be avoided; still, paddlers may encounter 1 m (3&#8242;) waves and 40 km\/h (25 mph) winds and should be comfortable in such conditions. While waterfront development is common along a good portion of the Island, much of the shoreline is uninhabited. Br\u00fbl\u00e9 could not have known that this unassuming island would play a\u00a0critical\u00a0role in supporting the fur trade and defending imperial\u00a0interests in the New World for\u00a0centuries to follow. To consolidate the distant reaches of their empire, the British built a fort on the southern tip of St. Joseph Island, a strategic peninsula overlooking the trade route. Completed in 1796, the fort was known as a remote and lonely outpost. Yet despite its isolation, the Fort&#8217;s\u00a0historical role\u00a0is undeniable: the opening\u00a0battle of the War of 1812\u2014a successful campaign to seize the American fort on nearby Mackinac Island\u2014was launched from here. American troops later burned Fort St. Joseph to the ground in retaliation for that initial attack.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"hrule clearfix\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"row\"> <div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>Today&#8217;s paddlers can still hear echoes of this colourful past as they glide through the scenic and sheltered waters around St. Joseph Island. The ruins of Fort St. Joseph are open to visitors and directly accessible\u00a0from the water. In contrast to its\u00a0military history, peaceful settlements, farming, and vacation homes are now\u00a0the way of life on this quaint island. Hardwood trees continue to be abundant, and vast forests support a vibrant maple syrup industry. Those fascinated by the technology of shipping\u00a0can observe behemoth Lake Freighters in their natural habitat, steaming to and\u00a0from Lake Superior. And along\u00a0the Island&#8217;s northern shoreline lies the\u00a0Canadian Shield &#8211; a rugged landscape of barren rock and windswept pine immortalized in the art\u00a0of the famous Group of Seven.<\/p>\n<p>To add to the area&#8217;s charm, camping is possible on a dozen wild, uninhabited islands, many with secluded\u00a0beaches of sand\u00a0or stone.
